Dealing with Employment #8220;Bait and Switch#8221; Dealing with Employment #8220;Bait and Switch#8221; Have you been hired for a job only to find that your duties are completely different than what you signed on for? If so, then you may be the victim of an employment bait and switch. If you were initially promised exciting and high-profile projects at the time of hire but end up stuck performing daily menial tasks it may be time to make some moves to improve your situation. First things first, you need to figure out whether or not you are really in a bait and switch situation. There is a chance that you are first expected to work your way up to your promised position; sort of an evaluation period to gauge your true abilities. It may also be possible that your boss was not adequately aware of the duties that the position entailed and, thus, mistakenly informed you of a false set of expectations. Regardless of the cause, you should begin your investigation with a heart-to-heart with your boss. The conversation should be simple: “I expected to do this but am actually doing this.” Bring up the official job description for which you were hired and get your boss’s thoughts on what is expected of you and when you can start working the more desired tasks. Make sure you express your motivation and enthusiasm for the original job description and send out feelers to find out what you can do to get where you want to be. This talk may be all you need to set things straight. But you don’t need to rely on others to get you where you want to go. Take some initiative of your own and tackle some of the issues that necessitate some of the menial aspects of your job. Try to automate tedious processes or at least make them more efficient. You may also create your own projects to solve more complicated problems around your office. If your boss is unable to help alleviate your issues, consider approaching your human resources representative about transferring to another department or team. You may even have the recommendation of your current boss if the bait and switch was unintentional. This approach alleviates the hassles of performing another job search and may place you in a position more suited to your interests, goals, and strengths. The option of last resort is to quit. If you can find no suitable alternatives within your current employer and your boss is unable or unwilling to accommodate your needs, you may need to find another job where the job description matches reality and you don’t have to work so hard to feel fulfilled. Unless you signed an employment contract obligating you to work for a set amount of time, you should have no problems exiting your undesirable position with no professional repercussions. Never settle for an unfulfilling job and/or one that doesnt offer a challenge, especially one you’ve been tricked into accepting. There are always better options for those who are patient and persevering enough to brave the job market for more fitting employment.

My female colleagues are determined to run a business and have kids. At this age, it̢۪s what starts happening. I̢۪ve received numerous baby shower invitations and comments that if I have kids soon, then we can plan playdates together.It̢۪s easy to start feeling left out and panicked that your friendships may diverge because you are not rushing to get a bun in the oven. Whether it is friends or family, there̢۪s no need to feel guilty about choosing your career over kids. Here̢۪s why.There̢۪s no need to conform to social normsWhile I̢۪ve heard about a biological clock ticking away, the problem is that, for me, I don̢۪t hear anything. Having children is not something I feel passionate about. In the past, it might have been taboo to say that out loud for fear you would be labeled as selfish or mean. The reality is that those people who d o not feel strongly about having children should not have them.Otherwise, they are just doing it because it is the social norm or they have too much pressure from family and friends. In reality, some people are not cut out to be parents and are actually doing the right thing in not taking on something that they will come to resent later. Every child deserves loving parents who love what they do.Your company is your childOn the other hand, running my own business and the career I̢۪m developing is what I feel passionate about and where I feel I can truly succeed. It̢۪s where I want to put my energy and where I feel I can actually help people more than bringing a child into the world. I know that I am good when I focus on one large thing at a time. My personal experiences of trying to multitask have not gone well. And, when I see women trying to be Wonder Women, I also don̢۪t see them succeeding at raising both types of children. Or, if they do appear successful, these women looked run down and burned out. Neither of those options is appealing.It̢۪s best to be on the same pageMy partner and I agree that having a family isn̢۪t something we want to do now, and quite possibly never. At this point in our lives, we don̢۪t own a pet either. That̢۪s because we both have careers in mind that involve traveling and long hours. If you have a partner, it̢۪s important to make sure they are on the same page as you in terms of family and career goals.If one is secretly pining for kids, then it̢۪s not going to work and will end badly. Having someone who thinks like me and is focused on their career also means we understand the long hours or other career responsibilities that take us away from handling other tasks at home. If we were both to focus on our careers but also had pets and kids, there would be additional stress surrounding who would take on what responsibilities.Money only goes so farI believe it is hard enough to get by financially in certain areas of the cou ntry like Silicon Valley (where I live) with just a career on my plate. Add children, pets, and all their needs to the budget and it seems next to impossible. That again breeds more stress than necessary in my opinion. Also, in starting a business to fulfill certain dreams, there are costs and risks involved where it would make me more nervous and hesitant should I have kids who need that money that I̢۪m now putting into a business. Choosing my career over children means that I̢۪m going to absorb all the results of the risk rather than put some little person in a position where they don̢۪t have all the things they need while growing up. In my mind, trying to do both on a shoestring budget is more selfish than just focusing on a startup.It̢۪s OK to change your mind, tooMaybe later on, my partner and I will change our minds and hear the tick-tock of the biological clock, letting us know that children are something we want to have in our lives. If that urge and passion rise to the surface, then it is just as OK to change your mind and start a family. You could also discover an interest in adopting and helping out those children in great need. Whatever you decide to do, think it through, consider the pros and cons, discuss it with your partner and reach an agreement together.Most importantly, don̢۪t let anyone make you feel guilty about the decisions you make in your own life. Only you and your partner know what̢۪s best for your lives, including what you are capable of doing and what you want to achieve. You also don̢۪t need to explain or prove yourself to others for making these large life decisions in a responsible way. This doesnt mean that everyone can be good at sales, however. Many people new to sales are tempted to jump right into learning how to close a deal instead of learning the foundations of sales. Customers Are Priority One For a sales job to be a sales job, you will be expected to sell something. Whether you are expected to sell a tangible product or a service, you will always sell to a customer. Knowing that the foundation of sales begins with the simple yet powerful rule that your customers are your first and primary priority. While you will have to meet the expectations of your employer and sales manager, never let your focus to your customer weaken. If you start every work day by asking yourself how you can improve the service you provide to your customers, you will be well on your way to a long and successful career in sales. Sales is a Numbers Game Activity is a key to sales success. In general, the more prospects you talk with, the more likely it is that you will find someone who is ready to buy what you are selling. When rookie salespeople begin their careers, their sales skills are often raw and rough around the edges. To compensate for their less than fully developed skills, most sales managers will have very clear activity level expectations. Those new to sales should focus on not only packing in as much activity into each working day as possible but also to learn from their activities. Doing 100 cold calls in a day is impressive but possibly useless if your cold calling method produces no results. If you learn from your cold calling mistakes while improving on your cold calling successes, your activities will produce better and better results. Make Time for Training Sports and sales are very similar. Both athletes and professionals seek the thrill of victory, suffer through losses and need to train every day. What would happen if a professional athlete decided to skip training for a few days? If the training days skipped fell during the off-season, missing a few days would probably do more good than bad. But heres the thing: In sales, there is no offseason. Sales professionals dont just sell on Sundays during Fall and Winter. They need to have their sales hats on every working day. An opportunity can come out of nowhere, anyplace and anytime. If you had been slack on your training for a few days or weeks, the opportunity that you werent expecting wouldnt be an opportunity for long. If, however, you devoted at least 15 minutes every day to improving your sales skills, youll always be ready to turn an opportunity into a sale. Spend Time With Veterans One of the most effective and quickest ways for a rookie sales professional to learn the finer art of sales is by modeling. Before you start practicing your runway walk, understand that modeling means to learn from someone successful. The formula is fairly simple: If you do what someone successful does, youll be successful as well. Many would argue that if success were as easy as doing what successful people do then everyone would be successful. The truth is, however, that successful people do what unsuccessful people dont want to do. Their commitment to doing what is difficult, boring, challenging, hard and un-fun is what makes the successful, successful. The day after you start your new job, you need to find out who is the top sales professional in your company and ask him if you can take him to lunch. During lunch, ask him what made him successful and if he would be willing to meet with you on a weekly basis to mentor you. Most successful sales professionals are very busy but are also usually willing to help others earn success. Having a mentor from whom you can learn from and who is willing to point out your strengths and weaknesses is probably one of the greatest secrets to success that any professional should learn about.

But then there always seems to either be some kind of snag, they've decided not to move forward with filling the position, they've hired someone else, and of course there are the times I get ghosted. When I hear a candidate articulate their job search process and progress, I can usually pinpoint the breakdown. If you're getting calls, that generally indicates the resume is working (not the case though, if the calls don't actually match what you want but that's another post for another day). If you're interviewing multiple times, that's obviously a win. But what is happening that's causing the failure to land an actual offer? It could be that you just didn't ask for it. Let's map out some specific language you can use so that you can get out of the never-ending interview cycle, and land the job you really want. You Asked Questions All Through The Interview Right? Right. You did. Of course you came prepared with your intelligent, well-researched questions. Not only did you ask the questions, but you actively listened to the answers, and tweaked your subsequent questions accordingly. So, take this questioning a step further. Make The Ask Ask for the job. It's not too pushy, too forward, or too rude. This is key to the job search philosophy I share with the candidates I support: you need to advocate for yourself at every stage. In sales, this is called, closing. When you end the interview with a close, that means you don't walk out wondering what's going to happen next. It also means there's less likelihood that you'll get ghosted. Here's How To Ask You can use any combination or variation of the language below: “I think I could make some real impact here, and that we could work well together. Have I given you all the information you need to offer me the job?” “Now that we've had the opportunity for this discussion, I’m even more interested in this job. Is there anything preventing you from offering it to me? “This conversation has been rather enlightening, and I am truly interested in the job. What is the next step for consideration? I've enjoyed this interview and want to thank you for it. When will you be making a decision? It behooves you to make your ask right there on the spot in the interview. Know where you stand so that you can handle your job search accordingly from there forward. Also, before you leave the interview, if you didn't get the information already, ask for the interviewer's business card or ask for his or her complete contact information.
